🇺🇸 How to pray in a crisis?
It’s different than praying for a breakthrough. Daniel’s issue was a long time issue. He prayed for decades. A crisis is a sudden or unexpected catastrophe, and you urgently need help. You were caught unprepared. How do you pray when there is nothing that you can do? Our example will be Jehoshaphat. He is one of the good kings of the Old Testament. He did everything right.
And nevertheless, all of a sudden, he is under surprise attack of three different armies. He is out planned, outmanned, and outmaneuvered. Life is full of crisis. We can learn 6 lessons from him.
Turn to God for help
2 Ch 20,3: “He begged the Lord for guidance and asked everyone to fast" (that's the way to show God you are serious).
Jehoshaphat doesn’t panic: he turns to God. Prayer should be your first answer, not your last resort. Seek God for wisdom before you do anything else. And Jehoshaphat doesn’t do it alone. He doesn’t say “I’m going to figure it myself”. You’ve done that! In your life, your family.
No: he turns to others and say “I’m in a crisis”. He enlisted others to pray with him. What you need is a band of people: a small group. So Jehoshaphat gets everybody praying.
Now look at how he prays. Remember how big God is. The bigger God is, the smaller your problem is going to appear!
2 Ch 20,6: "Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you"
Remember what God has already done. This will build your faith.
2 Ch 20,7: "Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?"
Are you thinking about what God has already done for you? What God has already done in your life?
Remember what God has promised. Found your life on his promise.
Appeal to God’s character
2 Ch 20,10-12: “But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt; so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession you gave us as an inheritance. 12 Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
Jehoshaphat knows God is just and he can appeal to him. Circle “will you not”.
Admit my inadequacy
I cannot handle it myself. You have the power, I don’t.
Mt 19,26: Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Your inadequacy is no surprise to God!
Rely on God’s resources
Not your own! Jehoshaphat changes the focus from the problem to the problem solver. People look for a sign. Friends: God already gave us the [a] sign: it’s this book. Stop looking for a sign, and start looking in the Scripture. God’s will is in God’s word.
Relax in faith
Take a deep breath, and relax in faith! Jehoshaphat is scared to death. But he turns to God, and God gives him his great gift.
2 Ch 20,15-17: "He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s. Tomorrow march down against them. They will be climbing up by the Pass of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the gorge in the Desert of Jeruel. You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you."
Peace. You won’t have to fight. Not even to move! Sometimes in takes more courage to just stand there than to do something. When you pray like this, your battles become God’s battle. And his answer is “I will handle it, just stay here”.
If you try to fight all your battles alone, you’re going to have a bad time. Friends, it’s time for you to resign from being the General Manager of your own little universe.
2 Ch 20,20: "Early in the morning they left for the Desert of Tekoa. As they set out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord your God and you will be upheld; have faith in his prophets and you will be successful.”
Strength and success come from faith and listening of the Word of God.
Thank God in advance
Before you see the victory!
2 Ch 20,21: After consulting the people, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and to praise him for the splendor of his holiness as they went out at the head of the army, saying: “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.”
You should start right know to thank God for the miracle you are asking. That’s called faith.
He 11,6: "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
The highest form of faith is thanking God before you get the answer. Look at the sequel:
2 Ch 20,22: "As they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated."
There is power in praise.
Expect God to turn your battles into blessings
2 Ch 20,24-26: "When the men of Judah came to the place that overlooks the desert and looked toward the vast army, they saw only dead bodies lying on the ground; no one had escaped. So Jehoshaphat and his men went to carry off their plunder, and they found among them a great amount of equipment and clothing[d] and also articles of value—more than they could take away. There was so much plunder that it took three days to collect it. On the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berakah, where they praised the Lord. This is why it is called the Valley of Berakah to this day."
When you let God fight your battles, you become a witness. Everybody will know that God is on your side.
2 Ch 20,29-30: "The fear of God came on all the surrounding kingdoms when they heard how the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel. And the kingdom of Jehoshaphat was at peace, for his God had given him rest on every side."
So you are in a crisis? Do this. Give it all to God, and let him do what only he can do. That’s the prayer of crisis.
